Rufus
Lin is a Canadian pianist and singer/songwriter, based in Vancouver and Tokyo, who sings and plays the piano. His music activities are mainly in the following areas:
If you enjoy meditative music, highly
sophisticated piano improvisations with an atmospheric feel, and piano
music that captures the wistfulness, joy, passion and peace that are
present in every person, then you will surely enjoy Rufus Lin's piano
improvisations, which may be purchased on iTunes or Amazon.
Rufus
Lin's jazz vocal style is a curious combination of saxophonist influences
such as Dexter Gordon, Lester Young and Ben Webster, old-time crooners such as
Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, cool jazz minimalism such as Chet
Baker, and Rufus Lin's own unique balance of timbre shifts, melodic line
and rhythmic swing.
A further note about Rufus Lin's piano improvisations: Some portions
are clearly influenced by Japanese folk songs and traditional
Japanese music. These generally soothing pianistic rhapsodies
are filled primarily with soaring, sometimes aching,
graceful treble lines and melodic fragments. It is as if he is trying to make
the piano sing out, to make it express to the limit of its capabilities,
intensity, tranquility, desperation and poise. And the piano does
indeed sing, often in moving, minimalistic voicings, yet never aimless,
usually flowing clearly within some improvisationally discovered yet rational harmonic or formal
structure. This is truly noteworthy, since none of these pieces is
scored, rehearsed or even thought through prior to the actual
performance. Each piece draws its inspiration from a single person or a short story
that Rufus Lin has written (see Rufus Lin Editions). We hope that you too will discover and enjoy the recorded music of Rufus Lin, and invite you to follow the musical career and new albums of this active musician, who continues to perform and record on an ongoing basis. Thank you for your support.
